Colour Me a Sunset

Colour Me a Sunset

By Kate Smith, CMG, CfYH

Nature’s palette is always one of my favorite places to take colour cues and nothing is more stunning than the hues of a sunset. Warm reds, golden oranges and honey yellows instantly infuse warmth and envelope your space in style.

Sunset colours are natural partners on the warm side of the colour wheel. Working in unison they create a space ready to add texture and layers. Warm browns, like leather and wood, always work as a perfect neutral companion.

Don’t be afraid of pattern using colour as your guide. Just as a real sunset has gradual introduction of colour, use that as a guide when decorating with vibrant hues of red, orange or yellow. Introducing creams, whites or even dark browns also helps to mute brighter shades.

This living space is a perfect example of well-done use of pattern, marrying neutrals with the sunset colours. The faux finish accent wall adds colour and texture without overwhelming the room. The warm pumpkin tones in the room warm it up, while the white really adds to the contemporary flavour.

A palette that includes red or orange allows you to have fun with your colour. One great way to infuse vibrant spots of red or orange while still leaving the space inviting is with cream and yellow.

Using sunset colours together and adding gold metallic tones can also be very elegant. This space glows golden with just the right touch of poppy red.

Looking for a space that feels care free? Focus on orange as your centerpiece. Use salmon as a backdrop then; punching it up with hotter shades of rust and amber can really bringing any space to a whole new level of enjoyment.

Not traditionally a sunset hue, blue is a perfect partner for this colour scheme, reminiscent of the skyline that so wonderfully offsets these colours at the end of a summer day. Keeping it light and bright, as in this living room, just a hint of blue in accessories or textiles can soften the sunset oranges, reds and yellows.

A soothing sunset can be brought indoors in practically any space in your home. High end or casual vibe – whatever your design style – you can achieve your look simply with nature’s companions red, orange and yellow.
