Duracoat Expert Centre Holds First Female Training

4th December, 2015

The Duracoat Expert Centre, a CSR arm of Basco Paints was recently privileged to hold an all female training at the AIC Kibra Church in partnership with National Construction Authority (NCA). Unlike past trainings that included both male and female trainees, this training had female trainees exclusively. This marked the 4th training to he held under the Mafundi Mufti Partnership run by the NCA that involves training artisans in various counties across the country.

Local NGO, Timeless Women of Worth (TWOW) brought together the 400 women for the Kibra leg of the Mafundi Mufti Training. They were then allowed to select an area of interest that they would undergo training from among four artisan trades namely; Masonry, Tiling, Painting and Bricklaying. The trainees ranged from 16-84 years with the women showing great aptitude and passion to learn skills that would enable them earn a living and empower their lives and those of their family members.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, the NCA General Manager, Eng. Maurice Aketch encouraged the women to consider themselves as skilled laborers and be assured that they were armed and had what it takes to face the world out there. He added that NCA was happy to partner with progressive corporates such as Basco Paints, Savannah Cement, Mabati Rollings and Athi River Mining to train and build capacity of individuals in the construction industry.

Basco Paints Technical Manager, Benn Mumanyi in his address congratulated all the graduates and wished them success as they embark on putting their skills into practice in the market. He urged them to form partnerships right at the training venue and be sure to keep in touch once they leave. This would ensure those who got jobs a ready supply of labour as well as income for the whole team.

TWOW Founder, Mrs. Nyakan Munyeki on the other hand reminded the women that from the time they had identified the women back in July and begun their sensitization trainings, the women had grown leaps and bounds. She noted that while in the beginning they were interested in receiving money, they had been trained on a more sustainable model of how to earn a living. Fifty women painters were trained at the end of the one week of training that begun on 30th November up to 4th December 2015.

Also present was the Nominated PS for Housing and Urban Development, Arch. Aida Munano, NCA Chairman, Arch. Steven Oundo, NCA Chief Executive Officer, Arch. Daniel Manduku, IQSK Chairman, Q.S. Andrew Mandere and AAK Vice President, Arch. Emma Miloyo among others.

The Chief Guest in his keynote address spoke to the professionals at the dinner urging them to engage in introspection in order to identify what was possible by their own efforts instead of the blame game on the failures of government. He asked each person to consider what would happen if they closed down their business and if anybody would realize that they have closed and what legacy that business will have left behind. As a KEPSA Board Member heading the Mkenya Daima Initiative, he reminded all guests that we only had one Kenya and no other alternative Kenya and we must build it.

IQSK Chairman’s Dinner Co-Sponsored By Basco Paints

27th November, 2015

Basco Paints recently co-sponsored the Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya’s Annual Chairman’s’ dinner held at the Serena Hotel on Friday, 27th November 2015. The well attended dinner was held in honor of the current IQSK Chairman, QS. Andrew Mandere. Alongside Basco Paints, was Tile and Carpet as a co-sponsor of the event, which saw both companies recognized as Title Sponsors. Both companies paid a total of Kshs 500,000 towards hosting the key event in the IQSK annual calendar of events.

Mr. Ziad El Khoury, Basco Paints Business Development Manager, spoke to the fraternity about the slow enforcement of the unbiased specification of paint in the bill of quantities. He noted that inspite of a sensitization seminar a few years back where it was passed that quantity surveyors should not specify brand names but rather quality on bill of quantities, this was still not fully in place. He urged the quantity surveyors to support Basco by enforcing unbiased specifications and creating a level play field for all players.

The Chief Guest at the dinner was Prof. Izael Da Silva, the DVC Academic Affairs at Strathmore University. He spoke at length about green building technologies, and the fact that Strathmore University was producing green energy sufficient for the institution as well as the excess being sold to the Kenya Power Company.

At the end of the night, the IQSK Chairman, QS Andrew Mandere appreciated the various sponsors who had supported the event including Basco Paints and Tile and Carpet as well as the various professionals who had taken time to come and join in the last calendar event of the year.

Kirdi Endorses Duracoat As Lead Safe Paint

27th October, 2015

Duracoat is lead safe paint was the message by Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute during the third annual Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2015 held at Our Lady of Mercy Primary School. The event brought together various stakeholders in the industry working together to create awareness on the harmful effects of Lead for the third year.

Speaking during the event, Basco Paints Managing Director, Mr. Kamlesh Shah said that he was happy to be part of the solution to the Lead issue in the country and also urged other paint manufacturers to follow suit. He added that, “as a responsible corporate entity, we are aware of the harmful effects of Lead and begun our journey back in 1999 when we phased out Lead driers from all our products.”

KIRDI working in partnership with UNEP and other organizations and government ministries have for the last three years been making concerted efforts to urge paint manufacturers to transition their production into Lead Safe paint. Basco Paints is proud to have voluntarily transitioned to Lead Safe paint in the Duracoat Decoratives range in the year 2013, seven years ahead of the global deadline for manufacturers.

Duracoat Paints that were to be donated to Our Lady of Mercy Primary School during the occasion were initially tested by KIRDI in three independent labs which all certified the paint to be Lead safe. The findings confirmed that the lead levels in the Duracoat Paints were well below globally acceptable levels which are 90 parts per million (ppm); the tested paints had levels between 0.02 and 0.05ppm of lead in them.

Some of the adverse effects of Lead include mild mental retardation, intellectual disabilities, and cardiovascular diseases among other health complications. The WHO and UNEP formed the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead in Paint (GAELP) to champion the global efforts and ensure that by 2020 all lead in paint has been phased out. Locally they have been working with KIRDI to achieve this goal by carrying out awareness every last week of October.

Basco Paints Donates To Rehabilitation Centre In Korogocho

12 August, 2015

Light and Hope Rehabilitation Centre in Korogocho was one of the worthy recipients of donations by Basco Paints this past month. Nominated by Facebook fans during Ramadhan as having selflessly touched the lives of the community, they received a donation of Kshs. 25,000. Four additional prizes were awarded of Kshs 5,000/- each to commendable individuals who are also making a positive difference in the lives of those around them.

The Rehabilitation Centre, located in the heart of Korogocho slum, tends to children born with physical or developmental disabilities, and was founded by Ms. Joyce Kiarie who is a mother of a child with cerebral palsy. When her son was born, she was forced to face the challenge of raising him as a single parent with no family or community support, and thus embarked to find light and hope for herself and other mothers who have similar circumstances.

Joyce, a vocal and courageous woman, did some research within her neighborhood and discovered that there were many similar cases where parents could not afford treatment or medication, or to employ anyone to look after the children while they went to work. They would therefore abandon children with disabilities, or chain them to the house when they left for their casual jobs. Although living in a single room, Joyce decided she would volunteer to look after these children while their parents were at work in order to stop their cruel treatment. It would take a few years before the current land where the home is based was donated by a well wisher, and an office and four other rooms for use by the children constructed. Over 20 children are brought to the Centre daily, cared for and fed, and collected in the evening by their parents. Several others have passed through the home for rehabilitation and have then been assimilated into either a normal school or one for special needs.

Altaf Jiwa, Head of Marketing at Basco Paints, expressed his admiration for Joyce’s heart and passion to have started this Centre that is serving the entire Korogocho community. He added that Basco Paints was happy to support such initiatives that had a direct impact on the lives of members of the community.

Basco Paints CSR Overview

Basco Paints has engaged in activities informed by our CSR Policy that is centered on the following thematic areas:

Education and Skills Enhancement

Basco Paints is actively engaged in Education and Skills Enhancement under our flagship CSR Project the Duracoat Expert Training Centre. Started in May 2010 with an objective to turn ordinary painters into expert painters, for over three years the Centre has churned out graduates that are equipped with knowledge and skills that enable them earn a living as a painter.

Graduates from the Training Centre are highly sought after in various construction projects owing to the superior skills they acquire. In addition, the painters are trained in application of specialized finishes and hence are differentiated from the regular painters in the market. Many have gone on to start and successfully run their own paint contractor and interior design companies after the training.

We have trained a wide spectrum of individuals ranging from Architects, Contractors, Bankers, Economists, Lawyers, Interior Decorators as well as jua kali artisans and Form 4 leavers who have all passed through the same training indiscriminately. All applicants have an equal chance to be enrolled for the training and we do not discriminate on gender basis.

Close to 900 graduates have since been trained and the demand for the training is extremely high. The training duration of the course is one week. To date, we are the only paint company running Expert Training courses in this region.

Basco Paints has also been involved in educating bright students who are unable to pay school fees in order not to cut short their studies. For example, currently the number 6 top student countrywide, in Kenya’s KCPE year 2011- Remonah Maina is currently a Form 2 student at Loreto Limuru High School courtesy of the organization. She would never have made it to a prestigious national high school without our support; we intend to see her through to the end of her four years at the school.

Economic Empowerment

In close relation to our flagship CSR project, the Duracoat Expert Training Centre has produced graduates who have been trained on how to run a painting project and earn a living. Students are entitled to a discount after which they are able to make a higher mark up in their business. As they continue to carry out their business, they may also with time qualify for credit facilities when there is a need.

Arts and Culture

In early March 2013, the company engaged in an Art and Culture themed CSR, the Duracoat Spray for Change project that involved commissioning a group of 10 urban artists to carry out graffiti paining at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The artists painted their vision of a New Kenya on 180 metre long hoarding at the airport, marking history by making JKIA the second airport worldwide to have graffiti and the first in the Africa, the only other being Schipol Airport in Amsterdam.

Delivery trucks for Basco Paints were then commissioned as canvases for these artists to showcase their work, creating “mobile” art galleries for Kenyans to experience. In June this year, the first event of the Progressive Initiative brought together Kenya’s diverse musical talents to showcase their prolific versatility. The concert featured live graffiti art by artists who participated in the Duracoat “Spray for Change” Campaign, namely Uhuru B, Swift9, Wise Two and Felok.

In August, one of the artists from “Spray for Change”, Wise2, was selected to represent Kenya in a global graffiti festival, Wall Therapy, in New York, USA, based on his on-going work in the project. In November, the Spray for Change team was commissioned to create a custom art installation by UNEP for the International Lead Poisoning Awareness Week and the Global South-South Expo held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Since the start of the Spray for Change initiative, we have successfully managed to create a link between the corporate world and art and demystified graffiti from portraying negative messaging to a more positive side. The artists have also grown in terms of recognition and are now able to earn a living and expand their portfolios. They have also been involved in Spray for Change on the move projects where they are directly paid for graffiti branding work they undertake.

Spray for Change was featured on CNN as a project that creatively engaged Kenyans to think about peace and the future in the run up to the Elections. It has also been featured extensively in local print and electronic media. The campaign was recently a finalist for Best Integrated Marketing campaign in Africa & Middle East region at the Loerie Awards in South Africa, and also won the 2013 OLX Social Media Award in Kenya for "Creativity Beyond Borders".

Humanitarian Aid

Basco Paints has continuously supported various initiatives aimed at providing humanitarian aid for disaster cases. In 2011, the largely successful “Make a Mark Initiative” was carried out at the Sarit Center and Junction Malls where the public was mobilized to make a mark or signature on huge billboard in the atrium that had goodwill messages for the North Eastern Kenya community that was undergoing drought. The company pledged to pay for every signature made and the target was 5,000 signatures. The money raised was then donated to the Kenya Red Cross in food aid to the region.

Health

Hundreds of requests are received annually by Basco Paints to support various establishments with free paint. One of the criteria used to select an establishment is its objective. For this reason, we have donated paint to hospitals as part of our CSR, the most recent being Makunga Hospital in Kakamega, a needy and dilapidated hospital that required much support to effectively serve the community.

Sport

Our support for sport has been long standing and far ranging. We annually sponsor the Duracoat Duracup Cricket Tournament in July, The SCLPS Youth League Cricket and SCLPS Volleyball Tournaments, various corporate golf tournaments, including the Gertrude’s Annual Golf Tournament in September each year.
